Fight the Redistricting Coup
Most of us believe voters pick our leaders. Politicians shouldn’t get to pick which voters they heed and which to silence. But right now, the MAGA regime — a regime of bullies doing the bidding of billionaires — is trying to do just that.
In the span of a single week, Trump and his enablers launched a multi-state campaign to rig maps, erase voters from the census, and even unleash the FBI against elected officials standing in their way. This is not “politics as usual.” This is a coordinated attempt to cement permanent minority rule.
Texas Republicans Rig the Map
Trump demanded mid-decade redistricting - years ahead of schedule - to make the House unwinnable for Democrats. In Texas, Republicans listened. Their new maps will erase as many as five Democratic seats by surgically cracking apart communities of color and shoving Democratic voters into a few districts while leaving the rest safely Republican.
It’s not representation. It’s domination.
Democrats Resist
Faced with this attack, over 50 Texas Democrats used one of the few tools left to them: they left the state, breaking quorum and halting the map-rigging in its tracks. That’s not a stunt. That’s courage. That’s the fight for democracy.
MAGA Escalates With FBI Intimidation
Senator John Cornyn then asked the FBI to “locate” these lawmakers — not because they broke the law, but because they stood in Trump’s way. And the FBI agreed. This is authoritarianism in plain sight: when law enforcement is weaponized against elected officials for exercising their legal rights.
Erasing People From the Census
Trump went further, ordering a new census that excludes undocumented immigrants — a move already ruled illegal. The goal? To erase millions of people from political representation and hand more seats to whiter, rural Republican states. If they control who counts, they control everything that comes after.
Expanding the Coup
While this unfolded, JD Vance hit the road to pressure other red states like Indiana, Missouri, Florida, and Ohio to follow suit. This is not isolated. It’s national. It’s coordinated.
The Freedom They're Stealing
A political party tries to win your vote. A fascist regime tries to keep you from voting — or keep your vote from counting. That’s what MAGA is doing. They are trying to silence Americans based on what we look like, what’s in our wallets, or where we live. They want to take away our freedom to have a say in the decisions that shape our lives.
And unless blue states fight back, they could succeed.
Blue States Must Lead the Counteroffensive
This is where California and other Democratic-led states come in. Governor Abbott in Texas is doing Trump’s bidding. Governor Newsom in California is doing the opposite: giving voters the power to claim their voice and ensure the will of the people prevails.
California has already signaled it will redraw its maps if red states gerrymander first. Illinois is ready too. New York, Washington, Oregon, Maryland — every Democratic-led state must prepare, commit publicly, and be ready to act.
This isn’t about gerrymandering first. It’s about refusing to unilaterally disarm while Republicans shred the rulebook. Because if we don’t fight, they win before a single ballot is cast.
Red States Are the Frontlines
Here in Montana, we are already inside the map-rigging machine. This is where the coup starts. Texas is the opening salvo — but it will not be the last.
Here’s what’s happening in red states right now:
Texas: Republicans advanced a brutal mid-decade map to wipe out five Democratic seats. When Democrats walked out to block the vote, Trump’s allies called in the FBI to track them down.
Indiana: Vice President JD Vance is pressuring GOP leaders to redraw maps immediately and lock in more Republican seats.
Missouri & Ohio: Republican leaders are weighing mid-cycle redistricting to “pad the map” before 2026.
Florida & Georgia: MAGA operatives are laying the groundwork to revisit existing maps under the guise of “efficiency” or “compliance.”
This is strategic. Trump and his billionaires are using state power to redraw America in their image — long before voters ever get a say. And they’re moving now because they’re afraid. Trump knows his grip on the House is weak. He knows investigations and resistance could unravel him. So he’s trying to rig the system to guarantee he can’t lose.
What We Can Do in Montana
Even in deep-red territory, we are not powerless. We are critical. Here’s how we fight back from inside the machine:
Raise Hell Locally: Flood the local news with letters. Name what’s happening: a freedom-stealing power grab. Name the names. Make them sweat. And when the redistricting starts again here, we show up to the hearings in number.
Back the Lawmakers Resisting: When Democrats walk out or resist, stand with them. Give them cover. Amplify their courage.
Expose the Process: MAGA maps are written in secret. Drag them into the light. Force public scrutiny.
Link Up Across States: This coup is national. So is our resistance. Share stories across borders. Make sure blue states know what’s happening where you are.
Sound the Alarm on Federal Abuse: If law enforcement is weaponized against lawmakers for resisting, that’s authoritarianism. Call it what it is.
This is bigger than maps. It’s about freedom. It’s about whether our voices matter. It’s about whether the will of the people still decides who governs us — or whether Trump and his billionaire backers get to lock in permanent power.
